Staying Hydrated in Pregnancy

The humidity and temps are rising in NJ. It’s easy to forget to drink enough water on cooler days leaving you depleted on the days when you need it most! Use the formula “my current weight divided by 2 = the # of ounces of water I need”   If your current weight is 170 lbs, you need to drink 85 oz of water per day.  I know!  That’s a crazy amount!

The benefits of optimal hydration in pregnancy:

  • Reduces swelling
  • Reduces constipation
  • Reduces UTIs
  • Maintains healthy amniotic fluid levels
  • Flushes toxins from your system
  • Supports breastmilk production
  • Reduces blood pressure

Sign me up, right??  But it’s still SOOOOOO much water…..

What are the risks of being under-hydrated?

  • Uterine contractions
  • Cramping
  • Edema (swelling)
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty Sleeping

Many of these symptoms mimic preterm labor and preeclampsia.  This can lead to hospital admission and even unnecessary induction of labor.  Ready to get on board now?

What can you do to get more water in your body?

Infuse your water with fruits or herbs like:

  • Cucumbers
  • Watermelon
  • Peppermint leaves
  • Stevia leaves
  • Lemon Balm leaves
  • Orange slices
  • Grapefruit slices
  • Lemon slices

Freeze infused water into ice cubes to munch on.

Carry an articulated water bottle so you can see how much you have consumed throughout the day.
